AMISOM forces have vowed to double their efforts to rescue more displaced Somalis as COVID-19 fears grow across the country.
The troops, who are part of the KM50 Battalion, tweeted their mission on Wednesday.
In that tweet, the troops promised to continue supplying water to six IDP camps every day until the pandemic ends.
Currently, Somalia has thousands of displaced persons. Many of them have lived in UN camps for close to 30 years since the end of the Civil War of the 1990s.
AMISOM said, “Our goal is to help minimize the spread of COVID-19 in the country. To this end, we continue engaging community elders to promote social distancing and other measures.”
The AU troops recognize the importance of supplying displaced persons with clean water, which they need to wash their hands regularly.
AMISOM has requested Somalis to observe all the measures put forth by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Federal Government of Somalia to curb the spread of the disease.
