Reports from Somalia indicate that the Ugandan contingent serving as part of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has not received its salaries for 10 months.
Soldiers serving in the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) work without salaries.
On Monday, January 24, a team from Uganda tasked with investigations into the allegations of lack of pay revealed this situation.
The team comprised members of the Ugandan parliament’s Defense Committee and their colleagues from the Ministry of Defense.
UPDF’s soldiers serving in Somalia as part of the AMISOM forces number 4,500.
Stephen Kangwagye, the Bukanga South MP, asked the defense ministry to confirm whether the soldiers had not received their salaries for two years.
Instead, Edith Butuuro, the Under Secretary in the Ministry of Defense, said that the soldiers were demanding their salaries from March 2021 to date.
