ATMIS Announces Completion of Phase 2 of Troops’ Withdrawal from Somalia

The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has announced the completion of the second phase of withdrawal of its troops from the East African nation.

ATMIS concluded the current phase after transferring seven more forward operating bases (FOBs) to the Somali military on Friday.

It closed two other FOBs.

The second phase saw the organization reduce the number of its troops in Somalia by a further 3,000.

Souef Mohamed El-Amine, the Head of ATMIS, signed the Land Release Title Agreement together with Hussein Sheikh Ali, the Somali National Security Adviser.

The agreement signals the complete handing over of all the FOBs to the Somali government.
