The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has deployed 160 police officers to help maintain law and order in the East African nation.
The 160 officers are from Nigerian Formed Police Unit (NFPU).
The officers joined their Somali colleagues on Saturday, July 14. They will now work closely together in line with the Somali Transition Plan (STP).
A team of officers from Nigeria has been in place already.
The team, known as the Nigerian Formed Police Unit 10, leaves their colleagues to take over the duties and responsibilities.
ATMIS Police Unit needs a force of 1,040 officers in Somalia, as per the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolution.
Five formed police units are also permitted to work in Somalia.
The ATMIS police officers and units would then operate in the East African nation until their mandate expires in December 2024.
