Taye Atske Selassie and Ahmed Moallim Fiqi held Somalia-Ethiopia talks in Turkey on Monday, July 1.
The talks between the two took place in Ankara under the guidance of Hakan Fidan, Turkey’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Fidan invited Fiqi and Selassie for the talks in their official capacities as their nations respective foreign affairs ministers.
A communique from Turkish foreign affairs ministry said that Fiqi and Atske held candid and cordial talks.
These were the first talks between senior officials from Ethiopia and Somalia since diplomatic relations broke down.
Diplomatic ties between them broke down after Ethiopia signed a seaport agreement with Somaliland on January 1.
The two ministers explored ways of tackling the differences between them “within a mutually acceptable framework.”
Turkey confirmed that Fiqi and Atske are committed to the dialogue as a tool for resolving their differences thus guaranteeing regional stability.
