AU Chairperson Urges for Quick Resolution of Somalia’s Electoral Impasse

The newly reelected Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) has called for the quick resolution of Somalia’s electoral impasse.

Moussa Faki Mahamat, who was reelected last week to serve as the Chairperson of AUC for his second term, spoke about the predicament facing Somalia.

On February 8, he issued a statement saying that AUC has been keeping a “close eye on the latest developments in Somalia.”

He urged President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo to lead the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to work closely with Federal Member States (FMS) to solve the impasse together.

Mahamat commended the country’s leadership for holding the recent National Consultative Conference in Dhusamareb.

The Dhusamareb conference lasted from February 1-5.

The AUC Chairperson urged political leadership in Somalia to “reach a consensus on all contentious issues” to ensure that the country holds credible elections soon.
