The African Union (AU) might conduct a follow-up mission once the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) leaves the country.
Souef Mohamed El-Amine, the Head of ATMIS, said this on Wednesday.
ATMIS is expected to leave Somalia completely by December 31, 2024.
It has already embarked on a drawdown exercise that led to the withdrawal of 5,000 troops in Phase 1 and 2.
ATMIS now intends to drawdown a further 4,000 troops from Somalia.
El-Amine assured the stakeholders that the AU would not abandon Somalia. Instead, it would make follow-ups to ensure that the nation remains secure and stable.
