AU Peacekeeping Mission Has Trained over 8,000 Police Officers in Somalia Since 2009

The African Union (AU) peacekeeping mission in Somalia has trained more than 8,000 Somali police officers since 2009.

Rex Dundun, the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) Police Chief of Staff, made this announcement on August 25.

In his briefing, Dundun said that the mission has trained 8,167 police officers in Somalia in the last 13 years.

All the officers have been absorbed into the Somali Police Force (SPF) from where they are now enforcing law and order around the country.

In the statement issued on Thursday, Dundun also mentioned that the mission has a short period to prepare Somali police to take over all aspects of internal security.

Security forces in Somalia will assume all security responsibilities from ATMIS as of December 2024.
