AU Urges Somalia to Guarantee Media Safety

The African Union (AU) has urged Somalia to guarantee and fight for the safety of the media in the country.

AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has commenced the push for media safety in the East African nation.

Somalia is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists.

Media stations often bear the brunt of excessive force by the government.

ATMIS officials led by Fiona Lortan assured Somali authorities that an independent and free media could help the government solve some differences before they boil.

Lortan, the Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the AU Commission (DSRCC), said that media professionals play a critical role in early warning and crisis response.

She also stated the role of the media in post-conflict interventions.
