AU Urges Somalia to Implement 30 Percent Women Representation

The African Union (AU) has urged Somalia to implement the 30 percent women representation in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Ambassador Francisco Madeira, AU’s Special Representative for Somalia, made this request while briefing the latest United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Madeira briefed UNSC on November 24.

He touched on several issues pertaining to Somalia, especially the upcoming elections in the East African nation.

Madeira, who also serves as the Head of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), also briefed UNSC on the mission’s activities and priorities.

Authorities and activists in Somalia have discussed increasing women representation in parliament and politics for years but none of their deliberations has been implemented.

This year, there has been a renewed call around the country to implement the proposal thus increasing women’s participation in leadership.
