Mogadishu, Somalia – On Saturday, Auditor General Ahmed Isse Gutale concluded a three-day training program aimed at enhancing the capacity of compliance auditors within the Office of the Auditor General of Somalia (OAGS). The intensive workshop, attended by 30 auditors, focused on improving technical skills in auditing, legal compliance, and oversight—key pillars for strengthening transparency and accountability across public institutions.
The training comes at a time when Somalia continues to make steady progress in reforming its public financial management systems and tackling corruption. Gutale underscored the importance of building a professional and ethical audit workforce capable of safeguarding public resources and ensuring that government operations adhere to the law.
Over the course of the program, participants received hands-on sessions on audit methodologies, risk assessment, and reporting standards, with a strong emphasis on aligning national audit practices with international standards. Trainers also guided the auditors on how to identify irregularities and ensure that every expenditure is traceable, justified, and contributes to the country’s development priorities.
Gutale commended the participants for their dedication and reaffirmed his office’s commitment to nurturing a culture of transparency and integrity in Somalia’s public sector. He noted that an empowered audit function not only ensures fiscal discipline but also strengthens citizens’ trust in government institutions.
As the session came to a close, attendees expressed optimism that the new skills acquired would help them carry out more effective audits and promote good governance across ministries and public agencies. The OAGS plans to continue such capacity-building initiatives to further enhance Somalia’s oversight mechanisms and advance the nation’s ongoing journey toward accountability and institutional reform.
