MOGADISHU — The Minister of Family and Human Rights Development for Somalia, H.E. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, has officially launched the Somali Women’s Business Expo in Mogadishu. The vibrant exhibition was inaugurated as part of the nationwide events celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8 and the broader Somali Women’s Week.
Empowering Women in Business and Health
During her opening address, the minister emphasized the profound contribution of women to national development. She stated that the exhibition serves crucial purposes beyond mere business promotion. Notably, the event is set to offer free medical check-ups and essential healthcare services to women, specifically targeting those from underprivileged and vulnerable backgrounds.
Xersiyo Abdulle Siyad, Chairperson of the Somali Women Entrepreneurs Association, and Duniyo Mohamed Ali, representing various women’s groups, publicly thanked the ministry for establishing the impactful initiative. They noted that the expo is strategically designed to directly assist women entrepreneurs and those in vulnerable socio-economic situations.
A Broader National Strategy
Additional distinguished speakers at the launch event included Mohamed Bashir Omar, the Director General of the Ministry, and Bilan Bile Mahmoud, Secretary General of the Banaadir Regional Administration. The collaborative presence of these officials underscores the government’s ongoing strategy to strengthen partnerships for women’s economic empowerment and gender equality across Somalia.
Somalia observes Somali Women’s Week in conjunction with International Women’s Day annually. This year’s targeted programming concentrates heavily on enhancing economic prospects, expanding commercial opportunities, and delivering vital healthcare assistance for women nationwide.
