The newly established African Union Support and Stabilization Mission (AUSSOM) will operate in Somalia for not more than five years.
Details from the AU Commission indicate that the new force, which takes over from the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) will not have its term extended.
It will operate with a force that just falls short of 12,000 after taking over from ATMIS in the new year.
ATMIS will not have any presence in Somalia as of December 31, 2024 when the last of its forces leave the East African nation.
The transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM awaits the final approval of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
The approved concept of operations (CONOPS) contain no information on the countries that shall contribute forces to the new mission.
