Somaliland’s Awdal region has sent out an appeal to the country stating that they need 40 percent of the seats in the House of Representatives (Lower House).
The Lower House has 82 Members of Parliament who were elected on September 29, 2005.
This demand is the latest in a long line of disputes over the allocation of regional seats in the Lower House.
Traditional leaders and elders from the region met earlier this week and voiced their concerns over what they consider “unfair” allocation of seats.
Currently, Awdal has 13 representatives in the Lower House, which is the third highest in the country behind Hargeisa’s 20 and Togdheer’s 15.
If the current demand goes through, then the region would see its numbers increase to 33.
The region’s biggest clan, Gadabursi, said none of its people would participate in the upcoming elections unless this demand is met.
