President Joe Biden has approved the return of a few United States forces to Somalia.
Biden authorized the redeployment of around 500 troops back to Somalia only two years after his predecessor President Donald Trump ordered their withdrawal from the East African nation.
The US President signed the order that allows American forces back into Somalia on May 16, 2022.
His order came a few hours after Somalia elected Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as its new President.
According to a White House official who spoke to the press anonymously, Al-Shabaab had grown stronger since December 2020 when US Africa Command (AFRICOM) forces left Somalia.
