CARE International Country Director Kicked Out of Somalia

Iman Abdullahi, CARE International Country Director for Somalia, has been kicked out of the country with immediate effect.

On Tuesday August 17, Somalia’s Minister of Education released a statement indicating that Iman is no longer welcomed to stay or work in the country.

Minister Abdullahi Godah Barre, who is in charge of the education docket in the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), announced Iman’s expulsion to the public.

Barre accused Iman of “meddling in politics.”

As per the contents of a letter from Barre, Iman has been operating in gross disregard of government policies and procedures.

Barre also accused the CARE boss of “creating unnecessary tensions between the Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member States.”

Iman becomes the second high-ranking official of an international organization operating in Somalia to be kicked out of the country.

In January 2019, Nicholas Haysom, a former head of the United Nations in Somalia (UNSOM) was also shown the door by the government.

At the time, Somalia accused him of “meddling in its internal affairs” after he commented on political fights that took place in Baidoa before the December 2018 presidential polls.
