Villagers in central Somalia now have to grapple with the shackles of drought and debt increasing fears of unimaginable suffering.
In one such village – El Hur – shopkeepers complain that their customers, who are mostly pastoralists, are unable to clear their debts.
On their part, the pastoralists are unable to repay their debts because of the drought that has killed their livestock.
Moreover, they are incapable of selling their animals.
The situation then forces the pastoralists to buy goods on credit.
Further, it’s much harder for local residents to access clean water for drinking due to the ongoing harsh climatic conditions.
