Civil Society Blasts Somaliland Parliament for Rejecting Bill on Women Quota

Civil society organizations in Somaliland have blasted the decision by parliament to reject the bill that established quotas for women and the minorities.

Meeting under NAGAAD, which comprises 46 women’s organizations, representatives from several civil society groups voiced their displeasure with parliament.

They told the political leadership that women play a crucial role in nurturing the country’s democracy, economy, and social cohesion.

Further, they reminded politicians that women form the single largest voting group.

The civil society groups reminded parliament that women only occupy 2.6 percent of all leadership positions in government.

On September 27, parliament voted to reject the bill that sought to increase women and minorities representation.

Nevertheless, NAGAAD has vowed not to relent until the number of women and minorities representatives increase substantially.
