Nasir Aideed, Somaliland’s Deputy Minister of Interior, officially opened a workshop on community policing on November 19.
The workshop is being held in Hargeisa, Somaliland’s capital city.
Brig. Gen. Abdi Hassan Mire, the Deputy Commander of the Somaliland Police Force (SLPF) joined Aideed in opening the workshop.
The purpose of the workshop is to improve relations between police officers and the local community they serve.
Captain Mohamed Yusuf, the Head of International Police Relations, addressed the workshop on its first day.
“Police community cooperation programs have proved quite successful for several years around the country,” Captain Yusuf said.
He listed some of the benefits of community policing as improved security, a decline in crime, and a reduction of organized crimes by youths.
On his part, Brig. Gen. Mire said, “Police force serves the community. They cannot work alone without the input and cooperation from the local community.”
He said that the workshop seeks to improve the police-community cooperation.
