Counterterrorism Operations to Resume in Hiiraan, Announces New Governor

Counterterrorism operations are to resume in Hiiraan, the newly designated Governor announced on Monday.

Governor Abdullahi Ahmed Maalin Sufurow, who took over from Ali Jeyte Osman, spoke amid reports of a fresh breakout of violence in Beledweyne.

Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF) fought with the Al-Shabaab militia on Sunday.

The announcement by Governor Sufurow comes hot on the heels of a similar one by ex-Governor Jeyte on the resumption of anti-Al-Shabaab offensives.

Jeyte spoke in his position as the self-declared President of Hiiraan.

He led Saturday’s operations against the terrorists.

Governor Sufurow, who was appointed by HirShabelle President Ali Hussein Gudlawe, said that the fresh operations would be the joint efforts of the Somali military, regional forces, and local militia.
