Crisis Group has urged Somalia and the country’s international partners to consider extending electoral timelines.
The Group made this recommendation in its latest report on Somalia’s preparedness for the upcoming polls.
Somalia is scheduled to hold local and parliamentary polls in December 2020 followed by presidential elections in February 2021.
In its report, Crisis Group has advised Somalia to renegotiate poll timelines with the international community.
It recommended a “brief extension” to reduce some of the pressures the East African nation is feeling ahead of the polls.
According to the Group, it is dangerous for Somalia to force proceed with the tight timelines.
In the report, the organization warns stakeholders of possible instability in the Horn of Africa nation if elections proceed under the current conditions.
The Federal Government of Somalia signed an agreement with the Federal Member States in September 2020.
Under the agreement, both sides recommended several timelines that have to be met ahead of the polls.
