DANAB Special Forces, a unit within Somali National Army (SNA), has welcomed the news that the United States plans to send its troops back to Somalia.
Reports from the White House indicate that President Joe Biden has authorized the redeployment of American forces back to the East African nation.
Colonel Ahmed Abdullahi Sheikh of the DANAB Forces called the decision a “welcome step” because Al-Shabaab had felt emboldened since US troops left Somalia.
US Africa Command (AFRICOM) troops left Somalia in December 2020 following a decree that then-President Donald Trump issued.
About 700 US troops left the country.
Biden’s order issued on May 16 allows 500 US troops to return to Somalia.
