Demand for Increased Women and Minority Quota in Somaliland is Lawful, Attorney General Says

Attorney General Abdisamad Omar Maal has called the recent calls in Somaliland for increased quota for women and the minority in parliament and leadership positions “lawful.”

The Attorney General said the calls are not against the law.

His remarks follow recent claims that the country’s politicians would be going against the constitution by increasing representation for women and members from minority communities.

Attorney General Maal said this during his meeting with traditional leaders and intellectuals from various marginalized communities in the country.

Sultan Nasir Sultan Abdurahman, one of the traditional leaders who attended the meeting at the Office of the Attorney General, later addressed the media.

In his address, Sultan Abdurahman said the Attorney General dismissed claims that the increased quota would be a breach of the constitution.

Maal said the fact that members of the House of Representatives brought the bill to parliament proves its legitimacy.
