Desert Locusts Expected in Southern Somalia in the Next Few Days

A fresh desert locust invasion is expected in southern Somalia in the next few days and weeks, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has announced.

FAO said that the invasion is expected in HirShabelle, Jubbaland, and Southwest states.

However, the global organization clarified that the new generation of locusts is mature but not interested in laying eggs.

Consequently, the locusts would not be too focused on eating and destroying foods.

The first invasion in the country took place in late December 2019.

Since then, the locusts have spread their wings into other countries around the Horn of Africa region, including Somalia, Eritrea, Somaliland, Kenya, Djibouti, and Ethiopia.

Several global organizations, including the United Nations, have donated funds to help countries in the region to eradicate the locusts.

It is feared that the locusts might cause food insecurity in Somalia and other countries.
