DPM Jama Commends EU for Role in Stabilizing Somalia

Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama commended the European Union’s pivotal role in Somalia’s stabilization during the inaugural federal-level Darawish graduation ceremony held in Mogadishu on Monday. The newly graduated Darawish officers, trained under the EUCAP Somalia program, represent a significant advancement in Somalia’s security sector reform.

EUCAP Somalia, a civilian mission under the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), focuses on strengthening Somalia’s maritime security, police capabilities, and the rule of law. Since its inception in 2012 as EUCAP Nestor and subsequent rebranding in 2016, the mission has been instrumental in building the capacity of the Somali Police Force and maritime authorities.

The mission’s efforts include training over 700 federal Darawish officers, enhancing the Somali Police Force’s command and control capabilities, and supporting the development of maritime law enforcement through the establishment of facilities like the Maritime Rescue and Coordination Center (MRCC). These initiatives are part of a broader EU strategy to support Somalia’s transition plan and ensure sustainable security and governance.

The EU’s integrated approach, combining civilian and military expertise, underscores its commitment to Somalia’s long-term stability and the strengthening of its security institutions.
