Drought in Somalia is Extremely Dire and Grim, Says Senior UN Envoy

The ongoing drought in Somalia has created an “extremely dire and grim” situation, a senior United Nations envoy says.

Adam Abdelmoula, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to Somalia, said this after visiting Baidoa on June 2.

He visited Baidoa, the administrative capital of the regional state of Southwest, following suggestions from Abdirahman Abdishakur.

Abdishakur is Somalia’s Special Envoy for Drought Response.

Abdelmoula and Abdishakur visited Baidoa together.

Abdelmoula, who also serves as the UN Resident Coordinator and the Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, said that the country needs urgent humanitarian assistance.
