Efforts Underway to Rescue 33 Indians Held Hostage in Somalia

Efforts are underway to rescue 33 Indian nations who have been held hostage in Somalia for close to one year.

Somali employers are holding the Indian workers hostage.

The Indian government has announced plans to not only rescue but also return the Indians back to the country as soon as possible.

Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, India’s Minister of External Affairs, announced the government plans concerning the Indian workers on Friday, October 23.

Reports by news agencies indicate that 25 of the 33 laborers are from Uttar Pradesh in India.

The 33 laborers started working for their Somali employers 10 months ago.

In the first two months, the laborers were treated well and paid on time.

However, the situation changed the last eight months and salary delays became the order of the day thus rendering the workers poor and unable to travel back home.

Jaishankar said that the Indian Embassy in Nairobi would take charge of the workers’ welfare and provide them with the necessary assistance until they return home.
