Ethiopia informed the United States about the impending agreement with Somaliland before signing it on January 1, 2024.
Ridwan Hussein, the National Security Advisor in the Office of the Ethiopian Prime Minister, dropped this bombshell on Monday.
Hussein claimed that the Ethiopian government under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed informed the US of plans to sign the deal with Somaliland.
The claim by Hussein is likely to paint the US in bad light in the eyes of Somalia.
For the past couple of weeks, Somalia has repeatedly hit out at Ethiopia for seeking to violate its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Several of Somalia’s international allies have also supported its quest for sovereignty in the ensuing diplomatic row with Ethiopia.
