Ethiopian authorities arrested several Al-Shabaab and Islamic State extremists who were planning to attack Addis Ababa.
A report from Ethiopia’s National Intelligence and Security Service indicates that the suspects were arrested while planning to launch attacks on the capital city.
According to the intelligence service, the extremists had attempted to exploit the current uncertainty in the country.
Currently, Ethiopia is in the middle of a heated fight between Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) and Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
The government has launched a military offensive in the Tigray region.
Consequently, the extremists wanted to take advantage of the current distraction by the intelligence and security authorities to strike different parts of the country.
Al-Shabaab and IS fighters have launched multiple attacks in Somalia since 2006.
