EU Launches $6 Million Project to Curb Spread of COVID-19 in Somalia

The European Union (EU) has launched a $6 million project to curb the spread of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic in Somalia.

According to the EU, the project would run for three years with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Somalia.

On February 3, Nicolas Berlanga, the EU Ambassador to Somalia, announced this new project.

While announcing the project, Berlanga said that it also seeks to strengthen delivery of health services across the nation of Somalia.

The East African nation’s health system is in a crisis after decades of conflicts, insecurity, and corruption.

COVID-19 has reduced the nation’s ability to provide quality health services to millions of individuals within the country.

In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, Ambassador Berlanga said that COVID-19 has offered Somalia an opportunity to improve its public health services.

Although the project was signed in December 2020, it has just been launched officially.
