The European Union has promised a new era of cooperation with Somalia.
Josep Borrell Fontelles, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, promised this during a phone call with Somalia’s newly-elected President.
Fontelles spoke with President-Elect Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Friday, May 20.
The two leaders spoke on phone.
During the call, Fontelles also took the opportunity to congratulate Mohamud for emerging victorious in the presidential elections held in Mogadishu on May 15.
He said that Mohamud’s victory offers the EU and Somalia an opportunity to embark on a new era of cooperation.
They also discussed various other issues including national unity.
Fontelles, who also serves as the Vice President of the EU Commission (EUC), spoke about the need for reforms and the security transition process with the new Somali leader.
