Mogadishu, Somalia – The European Union has reiterated its steadfast support for Somalia in the wake of Monday’s devastating suicide bombing outside the Damaayo military facility in Mogadishu, which claimed the lives of multiple army recruits and left several others injured.
In a statement posted on social media, EU spokesperson Anouar El Anouni expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and conveyed heartfelt wishes for the swift recovery of those wounded in the attack.
“We stand in full solidarity with Somalia in its continued fight against terrorism,” the spokesperson stated.
Furthermore, El Anouni mentioned that the EU remains committed to supporting the Somali people and government as they work toward lasting peace and stability.
The bombing, which targeted young recruits queuing at the entrance of the military camp, underscores the persistent threat posed by extremist groups in the region.
Although no group has officially claimed responsibility, Al-Shabaab has carried out similar attacks in the past.
The EU has been a key international partner in Somalia’s state-building and security efforts, providing financial aid, training for Somali security forces, and humanitarian assistance.
Monday’s attack comes amid intensified security operations by the Somali government and its allies aimed at dislodging militant strongholds across central and southern Somalia.
Somali officials have condemned the attack as a cowardly attempt to derail the country’s progress.
“This heinous act will not shake our resolve,” said a senior government official, as he informed the nation that the government of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud will continue to defend its people and build a peaceful Somalia.
The tragedy has drawn widespread international condemnation and renewed calls for enhanced cooperation in the fight against terrorism in the Horn of Africa.
