The European Union (EU) sent emergency assistance worth €250,000 to victims of Cyclone Gati in Somalia.

Cyclone Gati left a trail of destruction and despair in Somalia after making a landfall along the coastal areas of Puntland on November 22, 2020.

The financial assistance is for families that were directly impacted by the destructive cyclone.

Cyclone Gati affected the residents of Bari and Sanaag regions in the southern parts of the country the most.

It brought about heavy rains while triggering flash floods in various parts of these regions.

According to authorities, the cyclone affected 180,000 people while leaving around 42,000 individuals displaced from their homes.

A communiqué from the EU says that the funds would support 6,120 people from 1,020 households.

EU promised that it would release and distribute the funds through the Danish Refugee Council.

The funds would go towards promoting sanitation and hygiene while rehabilitating sources of water for the local populace.
