The European Union (EU) wants structural changes made in the African Union’s military operations in Somalia.
EU is one of Somalia’s most important international allies.
The organization makes huge financial contributions to the East African nation.
On February 2, the EU indicated that it would only release more financial donations after AU implements the much-needed structural changes.
“African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) needs structural changes,” the EU statement indicated.
As per the EU statement, AMISOM needs to put more emphasis on rebuilding the broken institutions in Somalia.
“AMISOM must not leave Somalia,” Josep Borrell Fontelles clarified.
Fontelles is the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
He stated that the EU would only continue supporting the AU mission once the old structure is changed.
