Ex-Military Commander of Somalia’s 1977 War with Ethiopia Killed in Afrik Hotel Attack

A former commander with Somalia’s military lost his life when he was caught in the siege by Al-Shabaab at Afrik Hotel in Mogadishu.

Retired General Mohamed Nur Galal was at the establishment, which is near Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport, when four militants attacked it on January 31 at 5pm.

Gen. Galal has been widely celebrated as one of Somalia’s greatest military generals.

The war hero played a crucial role in leading the military’s operations in the 1977/78 war with Ethiopia.

After his sterling record as a military commander, Gen. Galal also served as the Chief of the Somali National Army (SNA).

Apart from that, he excelled as the Minister of Defense in the federal government too.

Gen. Galal was among nine people who lost their lives in the 8-hours of siege by the extremists at Afrik Hotel on Sunday evening.
