Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire has criticized the Ankara Agreement, describing it as a “dormant volcano” that poses a significant threat to Somalia’s sovereignty and unity.
Khaire’s comments suggest concerns that the agreement, potentially involving external actors, could undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity and political cohesion.
The “dormant volcano” metaphor implies that the agreement may have hidden dangers that could erupt and cause instability in the future, potentially leading to further divisions within Somalia.
His remarks highlight ongoing debates about foreign influence and its impact on the country’s internal affairs and unity.
Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signed the agreement with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Ankara in talks mediated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday evening.
Both nations agreed to find solutions for the year-long diplomatic tensions that arose following the deal that Ethiopia signed with Somaliland on January 2, 2024.
