Mogadishu, Somalia – The Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education has officially launched the final examinations for government-recruited teachers enrolled in its flagship two-year national training program, a milestone in the country’s broader education reform agenda.
The assessment marks the conclusion of training for the first cohort of teachers, recruited in 2023, who have undergone extensive preparation under the program designed to raise the standards of teaching in Somalia’s public schools. At the same time, the second cohort—admitted in 2024—progresses into its second year of studies.
The exams are being administered by the Somali National University (SNU), which has overseen both the academic and professional development components of the program. Successful candidates will be formally certified as qualified teachers, ready to take up posts across the country.
According to education officials, the initiative represents a deliberate investment in strengthening the quality of learning and ensuring that Somalia’s schools are staffed with competent, well-trained educators.
“This program demonstrates our government’s commitment to building a resilient and skilled teaching workforce capable of meeting the needs of future generations,” a ministry spokesperson said.
Launched as part of the national education strategy, the teacher training program aims to close the critical shortage of qualified teachers while modernizing pedagogical practices. Beyond subject knowledge, participants are trained in classroom management, child-centered approaches, and inclusive education techniques to better serve diverse student populations.
The successful completion of the first cohort is being hailed as a significant achievement for Somalia’s education sector, which has long faced challenges stemming from decades of conflict, resource constraints, and limited access to professional training opportunities.
Officials say that as more cohorts complete the program in the coming years, the country will see a gradual transformation in the quality of public education, laying the foundation for a stronger and more equitable system nationwide.
