Somalia is on the verge of a worrying famine in the next few months, the United Nations (UN) top envoy in the country has warned.
James Swan, the UN Special Representative to Somalia, delivered this warning to the UN Security Council (UNSC) on May 23.
In his speech, Swan said, “The humanitarian situation in the country is worsening.”
Furthermore, he also warned that food prices have reached dangerous and unaffordable levels.
Consequently, localized famine could occur in as many as six communities around the East African nation.
The UN Special Envoy urged the international community to intervene with humanitarian assistance before the situation worsens further.
