Farmaajo Chairs Dhusamareb III as Puntland and Jubbaland Skip the Talks

President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) chaired the latest round of Dhusamareb talks.

The talks, which are taking place in Galmudug’s administrative capital, are held to allow discuss various issues concerning Somalia’s upcoming elections.

Essentially, Farmaajo was to meet with all the five leaders of the Federal Member States (FMS).

However, Puntland and Jubbaland issued statements showing that President Said Abdullahi Deni and President Ahmed Islam Madobe would not be at the meeting.

In Dhusamareb I, the five regional leaders met alone before being joined by President Madobe and immediate former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire for Dhusamareb II.

Deni and Madobe both blame Farmaajo for failure to demonstrate commitment to sign a deal indicating that the country would hold elections on time.

Further, they also accuse Farmaajo of failing to appoint a new Prime Minister on time to replace Khaire who was voted out of office by the House of Representatives.

Khaire’s ouster came a few days after he publicly supported timely elections and urged leaders not to extend their terms in office.
