President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo commended the House of Representatives for extending his term in office by two more years.
On April 12, the Lower House voted to extend Farmaajo’s term by two years.
The outgoing president’s term expired on February 8, 2021.
Since then, the country has been unable to hold presidential elections to elect a new regime in office.
Interestingly, the term of the legislators who voted to extend his term in office also expired in December 2020.
In Farmaajo’s words, parliament has “restored power to the people of Somalia.”
He called the decision by the Lower House “historic” for all Somalis, as it allows them to exercise their constitutional right to decide their political journey.
