Farmaajo Ignores Senate again While Appointing JSC Members

President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has appointed new members of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

On February 14, news emerged showing that Farmaajo appointed seven new members to JSC.

However, he did so without any consultation with the Upper House (Senate).

With this solitary act, Farmaajo has contravened the stipulations of the Provisional Constitution of Somalia, which he promised to uphold.

Apparently, Farmaajo made the appointments on December 30, 2020.

He appointed them by fiat.

The new members he appointed to JSC included Chief Justice Bashe Ahmed and Attorney General Suleyman Mohamud.

As these revelations spread around the country on Saturday and Sunday, lawmakers in the Upper House criticized Farmaajo for this move.

In their views, the lawmakers labeled Farmaajo’s actions “illegal.”

Furthermore, they also stated that Farmaajo had only acted in a manner that is likely to advance his political interests.
