Farmaajo Mourns Drowned Somali Migrants, Calls Irregular Migration a ‘National Disaster’

Mogadishu – Former President of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, on Friday expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of young Somalis who drowned while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea in search of a better life.

In a public statement, Farmaajo described irregular migration as a “national disaster” and urged the federal government to take firm action to address the root causes pushing youth to risk their lives.

He emphasized the need for urgent youth empowerment initiatives, warning that corruption, insecurity, and lack of opportunity continue to drive desperation among the country’s young population.

Farmaajo also called on Somali parents to play a proactive role in protecting their children from making such perilous journeys, noting that collective responsibility is essential in curbing the migration crisis.

The tragedy comes amid growing concerns over the high number of Somali migrants dying in the Mediterranean each year.
