Farmaajo Signs the Approved Agreement between FGS and FMS

President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo signed the agreement between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS).

Farmaajo signed the agreement on Thursday, November 12.

A joint session of the Upper House (Senate) and the Lower House (House of Representatives) approved the agreement on September 26, 2020.

A communiqué from the Office of the President shows that he signed the Indirect Election Political Agreement thus making its recommendations legally enforceable.

The agreement stipulated the measures that the country was to take to prepare for the upcoming elections.

It also stipulates that Somalia must hold parliamentary elections in December 2021.

Through the agreement, Somalis now understand that they would be holding presidential elections in February 2021.

Additionally, the agreement requires the establishment of Federal Electoral Commissions (FECs) to facilitate the elections instead of National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC).

It also defines the new electoral model.

The agreement mentions that 101 delegates are to elect the country’s new representatives.
