Farmaajo to Remain Somali President until Elections are Held, FGS Says

Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo is to remain the President of the Republic of Somalia until the country holds elections.

On February 9, Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu, the spokesperson of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), revealed this to the country.

In his address, Moalimuu said that the government is to remain committed to efforts designed at resolving protracted disputes involving the country’s top political leaders.

Moalimuu also mentioned that Farmaajo would remain in office as the legitimate president until a new one is elected to replace him.

Farmaajo’s term in office expired on February 8 at midnight.

Political leaders in the country are yet to agree any elections deal.

Last week, they held a National Consultative Conference meeting in Dhusamareb from February 1-5.

The conference attracted representatives from the FGS and Federal Member States (FMS).

However, five days of intense deliberations failed to produce any agreement.

As things stand, nobody knows if or when the East African nation would hold parliamentary or presidential elections.
