President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has welcomed the African Union (AU) to intervene in the political crisis in Somalia.
Farmaajo made his appeal to the AU on April 19.
He is currently in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where he’s holding a series of talks with President Felix Tshisekedi.
While in DRC, Farmaajo is expected to hold a meeting with Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta who arrived in the country a day after the Somali leader.
On Monday, Farmaajo urged AU to take “a leading role by facilitating an election process that allows all Somali citizens to elect their representatives freely.”
He also appeared to be pro-dialogue in his address by saying that all stakeholders will play active roles in the dialogue on the country’s democratic future.
Somalia has been in a political crisis in recent weeks, especially after the Lower House extended Farmaajo’s term by two extra years.
The country should have gone into elections on February 8, 2021 when Farmaajo’s term expired.
