FGS Regrets February 19th Violence against Opposition Politicians

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has apologized for the violence meted out on opposition politicians and supporters on February 19.

Last week, opposition candidates announced plans to hold an anti-government rally at the Unknown Soldier’s Monument in Mogadishu.

Government troops were deployed along the capital city’s streets to prevent opposition politicians and supporters from accessing the venue.

Close to 20 people were injured and killed in the incident.

On February 25, Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble met with the opposition candidates at Decale Hotel.

Afterward, it was announced that Roble apologized for the violence.

Consequently, the opposition candidates agreed to postpone the rally they had called for Friday this week.

Roble commended the Council of Presidential Candidates’ Union for their flexibility.
