Opposition to Hold Peaceful Demonstrations in Mogadishu in Next 10 Days

Opposition politicians in Somalia have been allowed to hold peaceful demonstrations in the nation’s capital within the next 10 days.

This was announced after a meeting between Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and the Council of Presidential Candidates’ Union on February 25.

The Thursday meeting took place at Decale Hotel in Mogadishu.

Several senior opposition politicians attended the meeting.

They included Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, two former presidents of Somalia.

Regional state leaders – Galmudug’s President Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoorqoor and HirShabelle’s President Ali Guudlaawe – were at the meeting too.

At the meeting, Roble apologized for the violence that rocked an earlier rally by the opposition in the capital city.

With this development, the opposition announced that they would be calling off their rally planned for February 26 at the Unknown Soldier’s Monument.
