Fiqi Says Somalia Could Support Rebel Groups in Ethiopia

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Fiqi, released a statement that marks a significant shift in Somalia’s diplomatic stance towards Ethiopia.

In the remarks he issued on Sunday, Fiqi indicates that Somalia might consider establishing contacts with and potentially supporting rebel groups fighting against the Ethiopian government.

This move is a response to Ethiopia’s ongoing discussions about formalizing a deal with Somaliland, a region that declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains internationally unrecognized.

The statement could escalate tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia, given the historically complex relationship between the two nations, particularly over the status of Somaliland.

The implication of supporting rebel groups introduces a new dimension to the regional dynamics, potentially affecting peace and security efforts in the Horn of Africa.
