The Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy has condemned illegal fishing by foreign vessels in Somalia.
The ministry issued a press statement dated March 5 on this matter.
“Our investigations revealed that foreign vessels have been operating in the country illegally since January 2023,” reads part of the statement.
The ministry added that such practices are a huge threat to the country.
Some of the consequences Somalia could grapple with include dwindling fish stock and a hit on food security.
Consequently, the ministry has encouraged all those fishing illegally to stop.
Furthermore, it advised foreign vessels to seek registration, licensing, and permission to operate in the country’s waters from the relevant authorities.
