“Flash Floods Could Worsen COVID-19 in Somalia,” says Save the Children

A fresh wave of flash floods has hit Somalia at a time when the Horn of Africa nation is in the midst of a grave COVID-19 situation.

Consequently, Save the Children has warned that the situation could worsen in a country whose healthcare system has suffered decades of neglect.

Additionally, Save the Children warned that the floods could have a devastating impact on the lives of children in the East Africa nation.

Recent reports have shown an increase in heavy rains, which have wreaked havoc in various parts of Somalia.

Elsewhere, riverine communities in Shabelle and Juba are in fear as they see the river levels rise to shocking levels.

On April 28, Gardo Town was the scene of heavy rains, which caused flash floods that led to the deaths of six people. Among the dead were three children.

Furthermore, additional reports indicate that River Shabelle is only 2 meters away from the risk threshold, which portends grave dangers to the communities in Hiiran Region.
